Neurodivergent friendly
“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”
— Audre Lordeou
Neurodiversity is a concept that recognises and celebrates the natural variation in human brains and minds. It encompasses a wide range of neurological differences, including but not limited to autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and Tourette syndrome. As a therapist, I believe it's crucial to understand and embrace neurodiversity to provide inclusive and effective care for all individuals.
Being neurodivergence-friendly in a therapy practice means creating a welcoming and supportive environment where individuals with diverse neurological profiles feel valued, understood, and respected. This involves adopting a nonjudgmental attitude, actively listening to clients' experiences, and adapting therapeutic approaches to meet their unique needs and preferences.
In my practice, I approach therapy with a deep appreciation for the diversity of human experiences and necrologies. I recognise that each person's journey is shaped by their unique neurodivergent profile, as well as their individual strengths, challenges, and goals. Therefore, I take a personalised and flexible approach to therapy, tailoring interventions to fit the specific needs and preferences of each client.
Moreover, I recognise that neurodivergence intersects with other aspects of identity, such as race, gender, sexuality, and culture, which can impact an individual's experiences and needs in therapy. Therefore, I strive to create a culturally competent and intersectional approach to therapy, acknowledging and affirming the diverse identities and backgrounds of my clients.
Ultimately, my goal is to provide a safe, inclusive, and affirming space where neurodivergent individuals can explore their experiences, develop coping strategies, and work towards their goals in a way that honours their unique neurology and identity. By embracing neurodiversity and tailoring therapy to each person's unique experience, I aim to empower clients to thrive and lead fulfilling lives on their own terms.
